British Coastal rowing championships
Fantastic results for Aberdyfi rowers at the British Coastal rowing championships 2023

Classes were men, women & mixed; race distances were 4km or 6km. Weather conditions were unsettled with winds generally calm to moderate in the mornings, moderate to fresh in the afternoons.

Aberdyfi Rowing Club was represented by our members Tim & Chloe.

First off on Friday morning was Chloe in the Women’s Singles Heats. Next came Tim in the Men’s Singles Heats. Both were well placed and qualified for their Final the following morning.

On Friday afternoon, Tim & Chloe raced in the Mixed Doubles. There were no heats for this event so this was the final. They rowed magnificently, finishing in 3rd place, winning the bronze medal and placing themselves and Aberdyfi Rowing Club firmly on the map. The first and second in this race were international sculling crews including one Olympic rower! This demonstrates the quality and commitment of our two young rowers.

Saturday morning saw the Finals of the Single Scull Races. Chloe finished 3rd in her final, winning another bronze medal. Tim finished 5th in his men’s final. These were again outstanding results for our rowers and Aberdyfi.
NOTES FROM CHLOE & TIM

Tim and I had a great time at the British Championships, having the opportunity to put the long hours of training into practice, and coming away with some medals makes it all worth while. Rowing against some international rowers with many more years experience and existing silverware at a global level was an opportunity I won't forget. A big shout out should be made to the towers (Dai Rice and Paul Chesworth) for getting the boat down in one piece, our support crew and of course we mustn't forget our boat handlers Jake and Paul who are more at home with a pint in their hands, however got us off to some of cracking starts giving us a good line from the off.

Our journey to the British championships has been a real team effort and would not have been possible without all the hard work Alun has put in to us both. Alun has been encouraging from the start and believed in us both, when our own self belief may not have been there. I recall Alun saying within my first few weeks of rowing "You'll never get a British vest playing rugby, but I can help you get one in coastal rowing", (I was never any good at rugby). Aluns hard work and dedication has been a big part of our journey and therefore deserves a big thank you from both of us... DIOLCH yn fawr iawn Alun!!!

In addition to Aluns hard work with us, a significant turning point for us was the arrival of the double scull at Aberdyfi. The double scull has enabled us to train as a pair and refine our rowing allowing us to grow in confidence and skill. Therefore, I would like to extend a big thank you to all those involved in obtaining the double scull, including club members, committee members, local organisations and businesses. We would also like to extend this thanks to Buddug for her continued support of sculling within Aberdyfi rowing club, her support is very gratefully appreciated. The Double scull has made a significant difference to our rowing and is also allowing the wider club to take part in sculling.....it really is a great asset, lets try and get more of us competing in future events.
